Obituary of Brian Edward Macklin

Brian Edward Macklin

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of a long time Kimberley hero, Brian Edward Macklin, affectionately known as “Bammer”. Brian, aged 74, was a cherished member of our community whose life was marked by his dedication to family, friends, and his passion for sports.

Born on December 8, 1950, in Regina, SK, to Ted and Winnie Macklin, Brian grew up in Lawson graduating high school and going on to receive his diploma in Civil Technology from the Saskatchewan Technical Institute in 1970. From a young age, he displayed a remarkable talent for sports, particularly baseball and hockey. His love for hockey took him on an incredible journey, wining the Junior B Championship in 1969, then playing for the Moose Jaw Canucks where he was the scoring leader in 1970 after several seasons he went on to play in the United States. Eventually, he found his way to Kimberley, where he played for the Dynamiters and worked at Cominco. Brian’s exceptional skills on the ice helped the Dynamiters win the Allan Cup Championship in 1978, a testament to his dedication and talent. His contributions to the team were invaluable, and his leadership inspired many. Recently, Brian and the 1978 team were honored with an induction into the BC Sports Hall of Fame for his remarkable achievement in the Allan Cup Championship.

After his playing days, Brian continued to manage and scout for the Dynamiters. He worked at Cominco until its closure and then enjoyed his retirement by helping others around town with surveying, remodeling, or building houses. Brian was always busy, but he devoted his time to his beloved wife Sheila, his children, and grandchildren when not playing hockey or lending a helping hand.

Brian is survived by his loving wife Sheila, his daughter Bobbi McDonald and her husband Mark (Cranbrook, BC), his son Michael Brogden and his wife Cari (Kansas City, MO), and his cherished grandchildren Kiersten, Curtis, Ty, Cal, and Jase.

A celebration of Brian’s life will be held at a later date. His kindness, generosity, and unwavering spirit touched the lives of many. Brian’s legacy will be remembered by all who knew him, and he will be deeply missed by his loved ones and the community.
