Obituary of Alastair NICOLL
In Loving Memory of Dr. Alastair Nicoll
With deep sadness, we announce that Alastair Walter Nicoll passed away on August 26, 2026, surrounded by those he loved.
Born on September 12, 1953, in Aberdeen, Scotland, Alastair lived a life filled with adventure. He grew up in Scotland, Germany, and Switzerland before studying at Edinburgh University. He later moved to Bristol, where he graduated with honours in dentistry from Bristol University.
After a brief period with the NHS, Alastair moved to Yellowknife in 1986. He took great pride in serving remote communities throughout the Northwest Territories.
Alastair was deeply proud of his accomplished career as a dentist. His work included outreach in small northern communities, his practice in Elkford, and his leadership as President of the Canadian Dental Association. One of his lasting legacies was establishing a regular dental surgery program at Elk Valley Hospital, which served communities throughout the Elk Valley for many years.
Alastair’s love of skiing began in Switzerland when he was seven years old. Their move to the Elk Valley in November 1989 was guided by two priorities: proximity to exceptional skiing and access to an international airport.
Cancer deeply affected Alastair’s family, having already taken his oldest daughter, Livvy, in 2019.
Alastair is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn; his children, Jenny (James), Richard (Kristina), Laura (JP), and Thomas (Leann); and his grandchildren, Emma and Ryan, Layla and Lacey, Oscar, Nick and Harriet, and Georgia and Henry. He is also survived by his brothers, Michael (Gabby) and Jeffrey (Crystal), Jeffrey’s son, Gavin, and many extended family members and friends who loved him dearly.
Alastair lived a life that was truly his own, leaving behind a lifetime of memories, stories, laughter, and love. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses and staff at Elk Valley Hospital for the exceptional care and compassion they showed Alastair during his final days.
A celebration of life will be held on September 12, 2026 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Knox on 2nd (201 2nd Ave, Fernie BC)
In lieu of flowers, we invite everyone to perform a random act of kindness in Alastair’s memory.
