Obituary of Dennis Hubert Hanke

Dennis Hubert Hanke

On April 13th, 2025, Dennis Hubert Hanke, beloved dad, grandpa, uncle, brother and friend, passed away at the age of 90.

The youngest of four children, Dennis was born on October 10th, 1934 to Joseph and Blandina Hanke in rural Saskatchewan. Growing up in rural Saskatchewan gave Dennis a lifetime of love and passion for the land. He loved farming and in his later years, he loved to wile away the summer hours beautifying his yard and the surrounding green spaces. In 1967, Dennis moved his family to Kimberley, British Columbia, where he pursued a career at the Sullivan Mine. Dennis enjoyed working at the mine and took pride in working there until his retirement in 1999.

After his retirement, Dennis was very active in SOAR, where he went to many conventions and met many new people. Being a man who loved to stay busy, Dennis also became a host to international students. Dennis loved his father role and gave many international students a loving home during their stay in Canada. His students were like family to him- many showed their love and appreciation by having Dennis come to their home country to introduce him to their families and culture. Dennis, who always loved travelling and exploring new places, adored the adventures he had with the people he loved. Dennis was honoured with the distinction of being one of the longest serving host families in Kimberley.

Dennis never lost his love of the Prairies. He loved watching Corner Gas, discussing wheat prices and made a habit of going back to visit his friends and family in Saskatchewan on a regular basis. The Prairies were never far from Dennis’s heart.

Dennis is survived by his son Cameron, daughter Lana, granddaughter Jennifer, grandson Raymond, numerous nieces and nephews and many friends. He will be missed by many, and will never be forgotten.

Thank you to the staff and caregivers at Garden View Village for caring for Dennis in his final years.
