Obituary of Dennis Mitchell Smith

Dennis Mitchell Smith

It is with great love and deep sadness that we share the passing of Dennis Mitchell Smith on October 5, 2025, at the age of 90. Born on October 29, 1934, in Cranbrook, BC, Dennis lived a full and hardworking life surrounded by family, friends, and the great outdoors he loved so much.

In 1959, Dennis married his beloved wife, Diana, and together they built a wonderful life in Canal Flats before settling in Cranbrook in 1985. He spent most of his career in the logging industry, where his strong work ethic and dedication shone through every day.

Dennis was predeceased by his parents, Josephine and William Smith, and his sisters, Dorothy and Lillian. He is survived by his loving wife Diana; his children Darcy (Kathy), Daralee (Jerry) and Devin (Allie) ; his grandchildren Damien (Stacey), Elissa (Dave), Megan (Jaydon), Kristina (Chayse), and Kayla; and his great-grandchildren Stella, Calvin, Keela, Clark, and Sully; his Uncle Louis Cloarec (Barb). He will also be missed by his sister-in-law Joan Bannister, many nieces and nephews, and dear friends Dale and Shirley Ostlund.

Dennis was a man of many talents and passions. He loved working with his hands, whether through leatherwork, knife making, or gardening, and he found joy in fly tying, hunting, camping, fishing, hiking, walking, and curling. A proud member of the Lions Club, CASARA, and a volunteer firefighter and first aid attendant, Dennis gave countless hours to his community. He even took part in many fire hose competitions, where his skill and camaraderie always shone through. His bravery was recognized when he received The Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem, Priory of Canada, for saving a man’s life.

Above all, Dennis was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He loved his family deeply and always made sure they were cared for. He enjoyed traveling, spending time outdoors, and never turned down a fun trip to the casino. With his easygoing nature and warm smile, Dennis had a way of making everyone feel welcome — he truly never met a stranger.

He will be remembered with love and fondness by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A Celebration of Life will be held on October 18, 2025, from 2 – 4 p.m. at the Prestige Rocky Mountain Resort Cranbrook. This will be a come-and-go gathering, where friends and family are invited to stop by, offer their condolences, and share a story or memory about Dennis.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the BC Cancer Society.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the Doctors and Nurses in the EKRH Emergency Department, and to Dr. Nishi of Fisher Peak Family Practice for their care and compassion.
