Obituary of Enid Rhoda Barnhardt
Enid Rhoda Barnhardt
Enid Rhoda Barnhardt (nee Wellman) passed away peacefully on July 23, 2026 at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital, with family and friends by her side. She was 99 years old.
Enid was born in Cardston, Alberta on March 19, 1927. She spent her youth with her parents, three brothers and two sisters on the family farm at Waterton, Alberta, where her parents operated the Waterton Dairy. After completing high school in 1945, she moved to Cranbrook to attend St. Eugene School of Nursing. While she was there she met Fred Barnhardt, recently returned home from war, and they began their lives together, marrying in 1948 and raising six children.
Enid worked as a nurse, first at St Eugene Hospital and then at Cranbrook and District Hospital, until the early 1970’s, when she became an instructor in Selkirk College’s licensed practical nurse program in Cranbrook. She retired from that role in 1989 and enjoyed her time travelling and gardening with Fred.
Enid believed in the importance of service, and gave her time and talents throughout her life to the corner of the world she loved so much, including serving on the Cranbrook Health Council and the board of the F.W. Green Home. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she cherished the community she found at Christ Church Anglican Church.
Enid was pre-deceased by her beloved husband Fred in 2006, and her daughter Jane in 2023. She was also predeceased by her siblings Elaine,Harry, Bill, Jenny and Cal. She is survived by her children Wendy (Bob), Dan (Carol), Roy, Lorraine (Randy) and Don (Sandra), her son-in-law Rick Grant, her 14 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Dr. Megan Ure, the Heart Function Clinic, and the 3rd floor staff at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital for the kind and compassionate care they gave to Enid.
A celebration of life will be held at Christ Church Anglican 46 – 13th Avenue, South, Cranbrook, B.C. on August 15, 2026 at 1:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers the family would ask that you be like Enid and do something kind for someone.
