Obituary of Ewald Hennings

Ewald Hennings

Ewald, dad, opa, passed away peacefully on his own terms at the Cranbrook Regional Hospital on May, 2025 at the of 90 years. Ewald was born in Germany, the youngest of five children to Otto and Anna Hennings. He came to Canada in 1953 by himself when he was 18 years old to join his sister and brother-in-law working at Knight Lumber Co. in Crowsnest. He moved to Cranbrook and started working at CP Rail in 1955. Ewald and Helga married on July 28, 1956, welcoming son Ralph in 1961 and daughter Joan in 1964. He enjoyed working at CP Rail for 35 years. It was a job he was very proud of, especially running the crane when there was a derailment. He was very fortunate to enjoy another 35 years in retirement. Ewald always said that he was very lucky because he had a really good life and he was very grateful to Canada for giving that to him.

Ewald is survived by his son Ralph (Therese) Hennings of St. Albert, Alberta and daughter Joan (Rick) Pellegrin of Cranbrook, grandchildren Nicole, Tyler (Krysten), Krista, and Stephanie, as well as great grandchildren Ellie and Kate Pellegrin.

Ewald was predeceased by his wife Helga (2021), his parents, 2 brothers, 2 sisters and 2 brothers-in-law.

Ewald’s wish was to donate his body to the University of British Columbia medical program. We are very proud of his decision. By giving his body, he is helping medical, dental, and rehabilitation science students at the University for the next 3 years. There will be no formal service.
