Obituary of George Georgopoulos

George Georgopoulos

January 9th, 1930 – August 26, 2020

It is with sadness that the family of George Georgopoulos announce his passing on August 26, 2020.

George will be remembered by his lifelong love Maria of 64 years, his daughter Tasia, sons Petros (Linda), Nionios (Shannon), grandchildren Ryan (Tasha), Derek, Dionysos and numerous nephews and nieces.

George was born in Greece and immigrated to Canada with his wife Maria in 1960. They first arrived in Calgary, moving to Claresholm, Alberta, and then in 1972 settling in Cranbrook. They opened the Apollo Ristorante and served the community for over 25 years.

George loved his community and donated to numerous local organizations, never turning any away. He was an avid fan of Hockey, even though he grew up playing soccer. He was a generous donor to the Cranbrook Royals, Cranbrook Colts, and the Kootenay Ice.

He was honored to be chosen Citizen of the Year in 1986, also a proud recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow award from the Rotary Club where he was a long-time member. George was the founder of the Cranbrook Annual Senior Dinner in 1982, which is still going on today.

George was predeceased by his parents and his brothers Nicholas and Dimitri.

Family and friends are invited to a viewing on Monday, August 31, 2020 at 7:30pm at McPherson Funeral Chapel. George will be laid to rest with a grave side service in the Westlawn cemetery on Tuesday, September 1, 2020 at 1:00pm.

In lieu of flowers donation can be made to the Salvation Army in George’s honour.
