Obituary of Hedwig Zurrin

Hedwig Zurrin

It is with heavy hearts that we had to say a goodbye to our beautiful Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother, Hedwig Zurrin (Hedi) on January 16th, 2026 in Cranbrook, BC, at the age of 92. She was just shy of her 93rd Birthday and has now joined her loving husband, Paul Zurrin, in heaven after 20 years of being apart.

Hedi was born to her loving parents Karl and Anna Zurrin on January 29th, 1933, in Uttenhofen, Germany. Hedi was the eldest of three children, her sister Anneliese, and brother Hans. Hedi and Paul both grew up in Germany, but didn’t meet until they were twenty, going to dances and riding on Paul’s motorcycle, they fell in love. Paul moved to Canada to start his career in plumbing, where he waited 7 years for her. He returned to Germany and asked for her hand in marriage. They were married in 1959 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. That same year, they moved to Thompson, Manitoba, where they were blessed with six beautiful children from 1960 to 1967: Phillip, Edgar, Sylvia, Robert, Andrew, and Richard.

Hedi was a loving mother who stayed at home raising her children, and supporting her husband’s business, Paul’s Plumbing. As pioneers of Thompson, they built a life together doing all the activities they loved into old age, water skiing, cross country skiing, fishing, swimming, and enjoying time with family at their northern cottage at Paint Lake. As part of their legacy in Thompson, they were a huge part of Mystery Mountain Ski hill and are remembered there to this day. Hedi loved serving her family, community, and God through the Roman Catholic Church. After 60 years of living in Thompson, she started a new chapter in Cranbrook, BC in 2019, to be closer to her children. She continued to enjoy swimming in the lake, and spending time with family while serving the community of Cranbrook and the Catholic Church until she lost her mobility and her health started to decline. She was an incredible cook, and everyone loved her baking, especially German delicacies like Linzertorte and Black Forest Cake. She loved making fresh bread and continued sharing her infamous bread with others right until the end.

Hedi is survived by her children Phil Zurrin, Edgar (Wenelda) Zurrin, Robert Zurrin, Sister Marie de l’Incarnation (Sylvia Zurrin), Andrew Zurrin, and Richard (Wendy) Zurrin. As well as her grandchildren, Whitney (Matthew) Lennox, Kaiden Romano, Thea (Josh) Roberge, Joelle (Barak) Pauls, Luke Zurrin, Kaitlyn Zurrin, Zak Zurrin, Riley (Justine) Zurrin, and great-grandchildren Niko and Kaia, Maverick and Khai, Summer and Sophia. She was predeceased by her parents, brother, and loving husband, Paul, of 47 years in 2006.

Hedi was deeply cherished by her family, and her legacy of love, strength, adventure, and compassion lives on in all of us.
