Obituary of Kay Diakow

Kay DIAKOW

April 29, 1926 ~ June 11, 2021 (age 95)

It is with great sadness that the family of Kay Diakow announces her passing at the age of 95. She was born to parents John and Pearl Popowich in the town of Buchanan, SK.

Kay was raised in a large Ukrainian family of twelve children and was the last surviving of her siblings. She married Matt Diakow at the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton, SK on October 6, 1949. They and their two children; Debra Wilson and Darcy Diakow, moved to Fernie, BC in November 1969. Kay is also survived by her two grandchildren; Bridgitte Danis and Braden Diakow, and great grandchildren; Savannah, Jackson, Charlotte, and Brooklynn Danis.

Kay was the most loving and strong woman to our family. She always put her family first, even before herself. Her son Darcy will miss all her cooking and baking that she took so much pride in. Their time making perogies meant so much to him. Her daughter Debra loved their out-of-town trips with her and their pets. She loved hearing her mother’s stories as a child and stopping in at restaurants to enjoy a meal. Her granddaughter Bridgitte valued her traditions and loved all their conversations on life. She loved waking up in the early mornings as a child to go pick raspberries and peas from her grandmother’s garden. Her grandson Braden has the most wonderful childhood memories at his grandmother’s home in Fernie. He loved the time he had with her there the most.

She loved the town of Fernie and the community she called home. She loved to attend church and be amongst close friends and socialize. Many remember her from the days she worked at the Fernie Motor Inn, but her family was always her biggest blessing. Kay loved providing a warm, loving home with amazing meals and just being there for everything her family needed.

She will be so dearly missed by this family, but we know she is our angel watching us from heaven. Her strength and her love for God, especially on her last days, gives us strength in this heartbreaking time. Thank you to everyone that has provided kind words and prayers for our family.
