Obituary of Melvin Gerald Casey

Melvin Gerald Casey

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Melvin Gerald Casey on March 28, 2026, in Invermere, British Columbia, at the age of 77, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Melvin was born on June 12, 1948, in Cochrane, Ontario, to his parents, Edgar and Anne Casey. Shortly after his birth, the family returned to Saskatchewan. As his three siblings were welcomed, their journey eventually led them west to Radium, British Columbia. It was there that Mel attended school and met Thora—who, by her own account, had her eye on him as early as grade two—a connection that would grow into a lifelong love.

Following high school in Invermere, Mel began working for Parks Canada. In 1971, he married Thora, his childhood sweetheart. Together, they built a beautiful life rooted in love, laughter, and unwavering partnership, sharing 59 wonderful years together, including 54 years of marriage.

In the mid 1970s, Mel began working for Deck Electric. Through hard work and dedication, he went on to purchase the business in 1994 and successfully operated it for close to 15 years. He took great pride in his work and the life he built through it, retiring in 2008 at the age of 60. Upon retirement, Mel and Thora became snowbirds, spending many winters in Tucson, Arizona. He loved the sunshine and became an avid pickleball player, while continuing to enjoy golf and softball with friends.

Mel was a devoted father to his two children, Adrian and Tasha, and a proud and loving grandfather to Jayce, Sullivan, Nixon, and Ruby. His family was his greatest joy, and he took immense pride in each of them.

Mel had a lifelong love of sports, especially baseball. He dedicated many years to both playing and coaching, sharing his passion, mentorship, and encouragement with countless young athletes and teammates. His impact on and off the field will not be forgotten.

Mel is lovingly remembered by his wife, Thora; his son Adrian (Shandra), father of Jayce and Nixon, and their mother, Kim Casey; his daughter Tasha (Josh) and their children Sullivan and Ruby; his siblings Glen (Debbie) Casey, Darlene Paniec, and Judy Sheeler; and many cherished extended family members, including an uncle, Thora’s siblings and their spouses, cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

He was predeceased by his parents, Anne and Edgar Casey; his parents-in-law, Gordon and Gladys Ferguson; his brothers-in-law, Melvin Thesen, Rocky Sheeler, and Mike Paniec; and his niece, Kim Boker.

Melvin will be remembered for his warm heart, his steady presence, and his wonderful sense of humour which brought smiles to those around him. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, laughter, dedication, and deep family connection.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the loving and dedicated staff at Columbia House for the compassionate care they provided. Thora was deeply grateful for their kindness and took great comfort in knowing Mel was always in such good hands. The family would also like to thank the many musicians who generously volunteered their time, bringing joy to Mel through their music. He could often be seen tapping his feet or clapping along, and quietly singing. We are also grateful to the many other volunteers whose time and kindness meant so much.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Church Trinity in Invermere, followed by a luncheon.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
