Obituary of Obituary of Howard “Howie” YIP

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Howard “Howie” Charlie Yip in Fernie, BC, on March 11, 2026, at the age of 85. Born in Cardston, AB, on August 15, 1940, to Charlie and Annie Yip, Howie was a man defined by his tireless work ethic, his deep connection to the Elk Valley, and a spirit that warmed every room he entered.

He grew up in Fernie alongside his five siblings, where he attended school and worked at their family’s restaurant, The Diamond Grill. After high school, Howie moved to Calgary, where he met Susan. They married and started their family, and he became the proud father of two daughters and a son. While in Calgary, he worked at Holiday Cleaners and Varsity Chrysler and also held a partnership in a fast-food franchise. Howie eventually returned to his roots in Fernie with his then partner Glenda to be closer to his mother, taking an opportunity at Coal Valley GMC. Through his work at the dealership and his active presence in town, he became a familiar and friendly fixture of the community.

Howie lived a full, busy life; he was friendly and outgoing and never met a stranger he couldn’t strike up a conversation with. In his younger years, Howie was an active member of the Chinese Golf Club in Calgary and spent much of his free time on the greens. He had a passion for oldies music from the 50s and 60s, always maintaining that it was the best music to dance to. Howie loved food and took great joy in cooking and sharing meals with family and friends. He also had a deep love for the open road, always ready to hop in his car for a road trip, often with a favorite casino as his destination.

In his golden years, Howie made his home at the Trinity Lodge, where he was a constant presence in the common area visiting with friends and playing cards. It was during this time that he also shared a special bond with his companion, Irene.

Howie is survived by his three children, their spouses, and five grandchildren who brought him great pride. He also leaves behind his five siblings and their families, including many nieces and nephews who will fondly remember their Uncle Howie. He was predeceased by his parents, Glenda and his companion, Irene.

Howie’s family is incredibly grateful to his friends at the Trinity Lodge and his inner circle in Fernie for the kindness, friendship, and support they provided throughout the years.

In Memoriam In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a local Fernie charity of your choice, in honor of Howie’s lifelong connection to the town he called home.

At Howie’s request, no funeral service will be held.
