Obituary of Richard “Rick” STRATTON

Richard “Rick” STRATTON

April 24, 1954 ~ August 3, 2026 (age 72)

Richard Gerald “Rick” Stratton of Fernie, British Columbia, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on August 3, 2026, at the age of 72.

Rick was born on April 24, 1954, in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, where he spent his childhood surrounded by family before moving to Kelowna, British Columbia, in 1971 at the age of 17. There, he began his career as a heavy equipment operator with a petroleum company and welcomed his two sons, Jim and David.

In 1976, Rick made Fernie his home, where he built both a successful career and a life centered around family and community. He worked for several local contractors while earning his Red Seal certifications in Plumbing, Gas Fitting, and Pipe Fitting. In February 1992, Rick fulfilled his dream of starting Stratton Plumbing and Heating, a business he built with pride through hard work, dedication, and a commitment to quality workmanship. His integrity, skill, and willingness to help others earned him the respect of customers, colleagues, and friends throughout the Elk Valley.

In 1977, Rick met the love of his life, Rose. He knew from the very beginning that he wanted to spend the rest of his life by her side. They were married on May 12, 1979, and together built a life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering partnership. Their family was completed with the arrival of their son, Scott, on July 14, 1981.

Rick embraced life with enthusiasm and found his greatest joy outdoors. Whether he was skiing, snowmobiling, dirt biking, boating, fishing, or practicing archery, he was happiest surrounded by nature and the people he loved. Summer weekends at the lake became treasured family traditions, filled with adventure, laughter, and memories that will be cherished for generations.

Above all else, Rick was devoted to his family. He was a loving husband, a proud father, and a cherished grandfather who took great pride in the lives and accomplishments of his family. His steady presence, generous heart, and quiet strength will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Rick is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 47 years, Rose; his sons, Scott (Jenna), David (Tammy), and Jim (Robin); his four grandchildren; his brothers, Wayne (Pat), Jim (Tara), and Frank (Tracy); his sisters-in-law, Theresa (Wayne) and Judy; and his many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Gerald and Evelyn Stratton; his father- and mother-in-law, Bill and Grace Cole; his sister-in-law, Diana Vicic; his brother-in-law, Bill Cole; and his nephew, Clayton Smith.

A funeral service to celebrate Rick’s life will be held at a later date. Service details will be announced once arrangements have been finalized.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Tiffany Vracas, and the Home Support nurses for the compassionate care, kindness, and dignity they provided to Rick throughout his illness. Their support and dedication brought great comfort to Rick and his family and will always be remembered with deep appreciation.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Rick’s memory may be made to Fernie Friends for Friends.

Rick lived life to the fullest. He worked hard, played hard, and loved with his whole heart. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the friendships he built, the business he proudly established, and the countless lives he touched through his kindness, generosity, and unwavering dedication. He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever carried in the hearts of those who knew him.
