Obituary of Verne HORNQUIST
Verne HORNQUIST
Verne Allan “Swede” Hornquist, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away on May 13th, 2026 at the age of 91.
Verne was born in Kimberley B.C. on February 26, 1935, and later made his home in Fernie. There, he met the love of his life, Bernice, and the two were married on October 6th, 1956. Together, they built a life filled with love and family, raising three children; Wayne, Darren and Char.
Verne lived a life shaped by creativity, hard work, and a deep appreciation for people, the outdoors, and the beauty of the world around him. From an early age, he showed a talent for both art and athletics, passions that remained with him throughout his life.
He loved golf, skiing and hockey and brought enthusiasm and joy to every sport, whether playing it himself or cheering on his family.
Verne studied surveying and drafting at the Provincial Institute of Technology and Art in Calgary before beginning a career with the Department of Highways and then East Kootenay Power and Hydro. He later worked at Greenhills until his retirement. Following retirement, he owned and operated Digger’s Sports Card Plus Shop, a reflection of his strong sense of community and love of connecting with others.
Throughout his life, art remained one of Verne’s greatest lifelong passions. He was especially drawn to painting landscapes, historical buildings, and the natural beauty of the Elk Valley. Through his watercolours, he preserved scenes and stories that were meaningful to both him and the community he loved. His family later helped create a collection of his work in a book titled Fernie and Area in Watercolour, celebrating both his artistic talent and his deep connection to the region.
Beyond his work, sport, and art, he found his greatest joy in building a life filled with family and shared experiences. Another one of his meaningful accomplishments was the cabin that Verne and Bernice built at Baynes Lake; a place that became a gathering point for family, laughter and lifelong memories. It reflected everything he valued; hard work, togetherness and enjoying the simple beauty of life. Verne was known not only for what he did, but for who he was: gentle, funny, thoughtful, and deeply caring. He believed in working hard, laughing often, and enjoying the simple joys of life.
He is survived by his loving wife Bernice, with whom he shared 69 years of marriage; his children, Darren (Shelley) and Char (Duane); his grandchildren, Steph (Jason), Brock (Steph), Sam (Seb), Erika (Matt), Brett, Laryssa (Jared), and Sean (Jas); and his great-grandchildren, Edison and Locke. He is also lovingly remembered by extended family and many dear friends.
Verne was predeceased by his parents, Doris and Eric; his son, Wayne; and his brother, Charlie.
Verne’s legacy is one of love, creativity, humour, and connection. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him and forever remembered.
The family would like to thank Dr. Stimson, Dr. Zakovich, Dr. Stuckey, the nurses, and staff at the Elk Valley Hospital for their compassionate care and support.
At the request of Verne’s wishes, a service will not be held.
