Sophia Perlman Quartet at The Arts Station
The Sophia Perlman Quartet will be in Fernie on Tuesday, October 9, at 8 p.m. at The Arts Station.
Born and raised in the vibrant Toronto neighborhood of Kensington Market, Sophia
Perlman began performing in street festivals and theatre at the age of four, and trained as a longstanding member of the Canadian Children’s Opera Company. After high-school, she was accepted into the jazz studies program at Humber College, where she studied with some of Canada’s most respected musicians and educators, including Trish Colter, Orville Heyn, Shannon Gunn, Alex Dean, Ted Quinlan, and Mark Promane. She was also selected to perform alongside renowned saxophonist David Liebman, and to participate in a select workshop with arranger Vince Mendoza.
Sophia has made a name for herself as one of Canada’s most promising young vocalists.
Her musical maturity and impressive ability as an improviser has made her a first call not only as a bandleader but also as a frequent guest with many of Toronto’s top musicians and ensembles including Richard Underhill, The Bob Brough Quartet, Richard Whiteman, The Toronto Jazz Orchestra, The Darcy Hepner Jazz Orchestra, Ravi Naimpally, The Toronto Rhythm Initiative, and the late Jeff Healey.
She is also the featured vocalist with The Vipers, whose self-titled, second album was released in November of 2011, and has been widely played on JazzFM, and CBC.
Sophia is also featured on bassist Brandi Disterheft’s first album “Debut” (JUNO Award, Best Traditional Jazz Album), Adrean Farrugia’s “Ricochet” (JUNO Nominee, Best
Contemporary Jazz Album), as well as releases by the Darcy Hepner Jazz Orchestra and The Toronto Jazz Orchestra. In September, 2012, she releases a new album with long-time collaborator Adrean Farrugia, ‘Alive at Musidem.’
In addition to performing, Sophia is much in demand as an educator, and teaches workshops and private lessons in Toronto. She is passionate in her belief that every child deserves the right to music education, and her early choral training came full circle in 2008, when she was hired by the CCOC to run OPERAtion KIDS, introducing children to the magic of opera through both after-school and in-school programs. Now in its fourth year, the program has worked with over 1000 children in primarily high-need communities in Toronto, and has developed to include support for teachers who are committed to providing arts programs in their own schools. In addition, Sophia is the conductor for the Butterfly and Ruby Choruses of the CCOC – their training programs for children ages 3-8.
Tickets now available online and at The Arts Station, Freshies, and Carosella.
