Upcoming exhibitions and workshops at the CDAC

Cranbrook and District Arts Council (CDAC) would like to announce their upcoming events for June/July 2013.

Don’t hate, decorate! The registration deadline for the Urban Artsy Deer Quest and Competition is June 20, and with over 25 deer already sold, this promises to be a highly competitive event. Deer are available now at the CDAC office, $35 for a doe and $40 for a buck. The Quest Forms for the deer will be available July 1st, also from the CDAC office, as is any further information needed regarding the project. Deer will be judged on August 24th at the Art in the Park event at Rotary Park alongside the Lion’s Club ‘Twice Loved Art’ Fundraiser.

Donations of art pieces in all forms are being accepted now at the office and anything you could donate would not only go to a good home, but a good cause.

On Saturday June 22 in the CDAC workshop space, Linda Bullock will be hosting an acrylic workshop. This workshop costs just $35 and is an introduction to acrylic gels, pastes and mediums. Aside from brushes and palette knives which students need supply, Linda will provide the tools and specialist media.

This media, normally costing a small fortune, will be offered for students to experiment with so as to produce a swatch of their findings. This course would be great for people new to acrylics or wishing to explore further with the medium, but not wanting to break the bank in order to discover the form of acrylic manipulation they like best. Consider it like a ‘play-day in acrylic’ said Linda. Registration is filling up quickly and is available now at the CDAC office.

July’s exhibition in the gallery space will be entitled ‘Open Art’, and will allow local artists to contribute to an exhibition without the restrictions of a set theme. There will be two ‘Open Art’ exhibitions, one running July 6 – August 2 and another from August 3 – August 30.

Members of the Cranbrook and District Arts Council can contribute to this exhibit for free, and membership applications are always available from the CDAC office during gallery hours. Gallery agreements for July’s ‘Open Art’ exhibition are available now from the CDAC office or by e-request to [email protected].

There is also an exciting opportunity for aspiring guitarists at the CDAC this July.

Carole Antonio is teaching a three workshop series in ‘Guitar Basics’. The course runs over three Thursdays, July 4, July 11 and July 25 from 7-8 p.m. in the CDAC workshop space. Students will need to bring their own guitar, picks and paper and will be guided through the basics of playing guitar. The course cost is $125 and you can register at the CDAC office today.

For soon-to-be mothers, there is a Pre-Natal Workshop entitled ‘The Art of Giving Birth’ with Christina Warmenbol on July 6-7. The classes take place in the CDAC workshop space, running from 10 a.m.-12 p.m., with a break for lunch, and continuing 1-5 p.m. The course cost is $150 and expectant mothers are encouraged to bring their partners and a journal. This interactive course will help mothers and partners navigate their pregnancy and birth to better understand the pregnancy and birthing process. Knowledge is power and this course covers many topics. For a full list of topics please contact the office, or visit the CDAC Facebook page, which can be found as ‘CDAC’.

Should you have an idea for a workshop, or wish to conduct your own, get in touch. The CDAC hopes to host a variety of new and exciting workshops over the summer and are looking for willing instructors.

All information regarding exhibitions, events and workshops can be found at the CDAC office on 10th Avenue South, via email at [email protected] or phone 250-426-4223, or at the CDAC Facebook page.
