The provincial government is accepting bids on a new woodlot licence near Skookumchuk, a move that will eventually generate new job opportunities across the region, Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Steve Thomson announced today, Oct. 16.

The woodlot licence covers approximately 1,198 hectares of Crown land along the Camp 14 Forest Service Road (also known as the Larson Lake FSR and Lower Lussier Road), on the west side of the Lussier River, south of Canal Flats.

The bidding is open to qualified individual Canadian citizens or landed immigrants, First Nations bands, and corporations controlled by Canadian citizens. The deadline for submission is Nov. 20.

Woodlot licences are small, area-based tenures that combine private land with up to 800 hectares of Crown land on the Coast and 1,200 hectares of Crown land in the Interior. B.C.’s 860 woodlot licences generate local jobs in planning, harvesting, road construction and maintenance, reforestation, silviculture and small-scale timber processing.

This new woodlot licence opportunity supports Our Natural Advantage: Forest Sector Strategy for British Columbia, which outlines a number of priorities to help grow the forestry sector sustainably, including continuing the expansion of the woodlot program.
