Bear sightings in Fernie, Hosmer and Sparwood

Elk Valley Bear Aware is keeping busy reporting bear sightings as food sources dwindle.

EVBA posted sightings yesterday and today (August 12) in Fernie, Hosmer and Sparwood.

On Tuesday August 11, a large black bear was reported walking up a driveway on Slalom Drive (on August 10) and was last seen headed towards the Fernie mobile home park.

There were also bear sightings reported by the off leash dog park in the Annex.

And today (Wednesday, August 12) black bear sightings were reported in Sparwood (for August 11) behind the recreation centre and by the Jehovah Witness Hall on Savory Road.

A family of three grizzly bears was also reported in the lower part of Hosmer.

Natural food sources are drying up and bears are making their way into Elk Valley and South Country communities, EVBA reports.

Bear proof your property and encourage your family, neighbours and friends to do the same. Garbage on the deck, in the backyard or on the curb at night will bait bears onto your property, your deck and maybe even your home, jeopardize your safety and will lead to a death sentence for the bears.

Lock up the garbage and remove all other bear attractants from your property and thanks for helping your neighbours, families and friends do the same. The end result will be a safer and cleaner neighborhood for you and your family.
