Calgary motorcyclist killed on Mile Hill

A Calgary motorcyclist was killed after being hit by a semi on the Mile Hill south of Radium Hot Springs last night (July 4).

At approximately 7:45 p.m., twin brothers from Calgary, Alberta were travelling southbound on Highway 93/95 up Mill Hill, just south of Radium on their respective motorcycles. They were on their way to Columbia Lake to visit a friend. One brother was ahead of the other when they both legally passed a slow moving tractor-trailer unit, which was in the slow lane of this three-lane section of the highway.

As the second of the two brothers completed his pass he cut in front of the tractor-trailer to pull into a viewpoint pull out.

The 45-year-old truck driver from Greenwood was unable to stop in time to avoid striking the motorcycle broadside, sending the motorcycle skidding across the oncoming lane and onto the shoulder, and killing the rider instantly.

The surviving brother and only independent witness provided investigators with his statement, in which he indicated that he watched in his rear view mirror as his brother cut in front of the tractor trailer unit.

Columbia Valley RCMP, South East District Traffic Services, BC Ambulance Service, Radium and Invermere Fire/Rescue were all dispatched to the scene.

Neither alcohol or speed are believed to be contributing factors in this accident and there are no charges anticipated at this point in the investigation.

Full mechanical inspections on both vehicles will be conducted.
