City asks businesses to sound off on cameras
As part of the City of Fernie’s investigation into the benefit of installing surveillance cameras in the Historic Downtown Core, the city is asking business owners to provide feedback on the use of such cameras.
We ask that you take a few moments to provide your comments on the following:
1. Has your business been the target of vandals/theft in the past 24 months?
2. If you answered “Yes” to question 1, what type of vandalism/crime took place and what means have you undertaken to protect your business from similar future incidents?
3. Do you currently use video surveillance equipment inside your business as a deterrent for theft?
4. If you answered “Yes” to question 3, have you seen a significant reduction in thefts/vandalism since installation of video surveillance equipment?
5. Do you support the use of video cameras in public areas for law enforcement purposes?
6. Do you feel the use of video cameras will help with the investigation of crimes and improve public safety?
7. Do you think that the use of video cameras on public streets, parks, and public property is an invasion of privacy?
8. If you answered “Yes” to question 7, would you still feel that way if the city had policies to prohibit the use of any camera for general surveillance, traffic infractions, or civil violations?
9. If you answered “No” to question 7, what other means of improving public/private safety would you recommend?
10. Do you have any other comments that you would like to share with the City of Fernie regarding the use of surveillance cameras?
Please submit your responses to my attention at [email protected] before January 6, 2014. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.
