City launches on-demand webcasts of council meetings
The City of Fernie is launching on-demand webcasts of city council meetings and public hearings on its website beginning Tuesday, Feb. 11.
“I am pleased to introduce webcasting. This initiative will help us ensure that our decision-making process remains open, informed and understood,” said Mayor Mary Giuliano Feb. 4.
The new webcasting service complements the mayor and council’s goal of building a more accessible, transparent and accountable local government, Giualiano pointed out.
“Citizens will be able to access meeting videos at their convenience along with the supporting materials such as staff reports and meeting agendas,” said chief administrative officer Jim Hendricks, adding, “Successful communities foster engaged citizens.”
The city has contracted with Granicus, an award-winning cloud applications provider for government transparency, efficiency and citizen participation. Its solutions are designed specifically to help public agencies establish meaningful connections with their community online, over social networks and mobile devices while reducing operating costs.
Last year the city redeveloped its website and launched a Twitter site.
Video streaming coverage of council meetings begins at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 11 with the city’s regular council meeting (date changed due to Family Day Feb. 10).
To view this meeting and a list of archived meetings, visit www.fernie.ca and click on ‘City Hall’ and ‘Meetings and Minutes.’ Regular council meetings will be broadcasted on Shaw TV channel 10 at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and 11 a.m. on Thursdays.
