City reiterates support for Ghostriders

The City of Fernie January 28 issued a statement reiterating its support for the Fernie Ghostriders following recent criticism on social media.

“Following recent social media posts, the City of Fernie would like to reaffirm our ongoing support for the Fernie Ghostriders Hockey Club and the important role the organization plays in our community.

“We also want to clarify facts and address misrepresentations. The city has acted consistently with established policies and bylaws, prioritizing user safety and fair distribution of ice time at Fernie Memorial Arena,” the city stated.

“Recent ice safety measures, including temporary pylon placement during a practice, were implemented to protect participants on a high-use, high-traffic surface after a busy weekend at the arena.

“Post-season ice availability, spring camp scheduling, and other booking requests have been managed according to operational constraints, including other pre-scheduled events, and communicated to the Ghostriders throughout the season.

“The city remains committed to supporting the Ghostriders while balancing broader arena scheduling, maintenance requirements, and community programming to ensure the facility is safe and accessible for all users,” the city said.

“We are working collaboratively with the Ghostriders Board to clarify information, correct misunderstandings, and maintain a constructive and respectful relationship.”
