City waiving $138,000 in DCCs for shelter

City of Cranbrook council unanimously agreed to waive about $138,000 in development cost charges (DCCs) for the Salvation Army shelter and transitional housing project last night, Oct. 24.

Council’s vote followed consideration of a letter from Major Larry Martin, the Salvation Army’s Divisional Commander for B.C., on the proposed 56,000-square-foot, three-storey, $16.6 million shelter, which would feature 72 units.

“This is a great opportunity for the city,” said Coun, Jim Wavrecan.

Coun. Diana J. Scott said she is happy the city “can help facilitate” the project, which will be located at 533 Slater Road.

Coun. Angus Davis agreed. “I’m glad the city is able to consider this request. The numbers of people (who) are really hurting are growing,” he said.

The waiver of the DCCs is in accordance with Development Cost Charge Amendment Bylaw No.  3693.
