Deer cull gets funds
City of Cranbrook council July 18 unanimously agreed to an Urban Deer Committee request for $13,000 to conduct an upcoming deer cull.
The committee was originally established to address the growing problem of urban deer spreading out through the city. Like all communities in the East Kootenay, Cranbrook is trying to come to terms with so many deer living in the city limits. Inherent problems include impacts to gardens and yards, but in the past year there have been growing concerns about safety, especially after a video, which went viral on YouTube last year, showed how nasty an enraged and frightened doe can be when believing her fawn is in danger.

Mayor Scott Manjak noted that the city has to provide the funds for the program while the province shall write a permit for the city to conduct the cull.
“I’m very glad to see the province has come to the table on this,” said Coun. Bob Whetham, back at his council seat after suffering a heart attack the previous month.
When asked about when the cull will take place, Manjak said, “We’re shooting for this year.”
His unintended joke earned laughs from councilors and the public.
“That’s the target!” Cracked Coun. Jim Wavrecan.
