Double semi crash now a fatality

The Elk Valley RCMP and East Kootenay Traffic Services are continuing their investigation of a collision between two tractor trailer units, which occurred over a week ago. The incident has since been classified as a fatal collision as one of the drivers has since died, several days later after the crash.

On Feb 17, at around 6:30 p.m., Elk Valley RCMP and East Kootenay Traffic Services from Cranbrook responded to a collision involving two tractor trailer units travelling in opposite directions about three km west of Sparwood on Highway 3.

As result of the collision one of the two drivers was seriously injured and eventually succumbed to his injuries in hospital nine days after the crash. The driver of the eastbound tractor was critically injured and was flown to a Calgary hospital at the time of the crash. On Tuesday evening, February 26, the critically injured man, a 62-year-old male from White Rock, passed away.

The driver of the westbound truck, a 45-year-old male from California, was examined and released from hospital without injuries on the night of the crash. The investigation of the collision is still ongoing, with speed relative to the weather and road conditions appears to be a contributing factor. Weather at the time of the collision was heavy snowfall.

The East Kootenay Traffic Services and BC Coroners Services are continuing their investigation into the crash and the man’s death. Next of kin have been notified. No further information is being released at this time.
