Early morning blaze claims chunk of downtown Cranbrook

Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services crews are still battling a downtown blaze that began in the 800 block of Baker Street in the early morning hours, April 24.

The block of buildings between Cranbrook Photo and The Choice have been completely destroyed in the blaze, which began at about 2:30 a.m. In addition to the buildings, the businesses contained within and apartments upstairs, a host of vehicles parked behind the building have also been destroyed.

Full details are not yet available, but it seems no one has been hurt in the massive fire, which has resulted in a full block of the downtown being closed, with most businesses locking their doors and keeping away due to the thick, oily, acrid smoke.

A light rain misted down as firefighters performed mop up duties, while citizens lined up on the sidewalk across the street to take pictures, chat and watch the event unfold.

Not surprisingly, social media has lit up with photo postings on Facebook and Twitter, with some chiming in with comments.

“Thinking of the businesses lost by fire this morning in Cranbrook. The community is very resilient and will rally to ensure that Baker Street is rebuilt,” stated Columbia-Kootenay MP David Wilks.

“Sending sincere regrets on this loss and whole hearted support to our business neighbours from Kimberley and District Chamber of Commerce,” stated Kimberley Chamber executive director Sioban Staplin.

Thus far it appears that the lovely heritage building containing Cranbrook Photo and other businesses, as well as the building containing The Choice, have not been damaged by fire.

East Kootenay News Online Weekly (e-KNOW) will provide more details when they become available. More images will also be posted shortly.
