Evacution alert lifted
With water levels continuing to drop, the evacuation alert for the City of Kimberley’s Morrison Subdivision and a section of Wallinger Avenue was lifted yesterday (May 1).
“Today is a good day,” said Kimberley Mayor Ron McRae. “On behalf of the City, I want to acknowledge the spirit and tenacity of those residents who were affected by this flood and thank the city crews, emergency program personnel and hundreds of volunteers who did everything they could to assist over the past week. We truly have an extraordinary community.”
Wallinger Avenue and Morrison Subdivision are being reopened to traffic today. The lock blocks and several pumps will remain on Wallinger so that the city can mobilize quickly should the water levels rise again.
“We are asking residents in Morrison Subdivision to leave the sandbags in place until the spring runoff is complete,” added McRae.
Damage assessments are underway on those homes affected by the flooding and small clean up kits are available at the City’s public works yard to assist affected residents as they begin cleanup efforts.
The city is compiling data to submit to the Provincial Regional Emergency Operations Centre (PREOC). The PREOC gathers information from all events in the region and submits that to Victoria. Victoria will then determine if the Kimberley flooding is eligible for Disaster Financial Assistance. If it is deemed eligible, the Province would work directly with affected homeowners.
The evacuation alert was issued a week ago and a total of 11 homes were evacuated leaving 33 people in temporary lodging at the peak of the event.
