Fernie adopts new OCP

The last time the city’s OCP was updated was in 2002.

“The Official Community Plan update was a community-driven process,” pointed out Mayor Mary Giuliano. “We are pleased with the level of public participation and confident that the outcomes reflect the goals expressed by the community.”

More than 700 residents took part in public engagement activities and opportunities over the past 18 months, sharing their vision of Fernie in the future, the city reported in a July 4 press release.

City staff and consultants also worked closely with a volunteer OCP Advisory Committee and a Design Review Panel through a four-phase update process.

The plan guides the city’s growth and provides a policy framework and implementation strategy for council by addressing critical issues such as housing, transportation, parks, economic development, the natural and social environment and infrastructure.

“Mayor, council and staff would like to thank the many community organizations, committee volunteers, stakeholders and public for providing input to ensure the plan reflects the community’s vision for the future,” the city press release stated.
