Fire Rescue, city thankful for residents’ kindness

Last Friday’s (Feb. 12) house fire in Fernie that claimed the life of 69-year-old Aldo Scarpelli has left the city with a heavy heart.

Fernie Fire DeptThe City of Fernie and Fernie Fire Rescue today reached out to commend city residents for their compassion and kindness.

“Fernie Fire Rescue extend thanks to our community for kindness and appreciation shown to members for their efforts as a result of the tragic fire February 12, and extend sincere condolences to the family for such a terrible loss,” the fire department said in a public statement.

At approximately 4:44 p.m. on February 12, Fernie Fire Rescue (FFR) responded to the report of a structure fire at 1301-8th Avenue.

“Upon our arrival at the scene the home was fully engulfed in flames. Five units and 16 firefighters responded to the call. After the initial assessment it was determined that the home was beyond saving and our role would be to operate in a defensive mode. As entry of the building was unsafe for staff, fire crews focused their efforts on saving the adjacent home and were successful in doing so,” FFR’s public statement outlined.

“We recognize and value the dedication and professionalism of our firefighters in containing the fire. Fernie Fire Rescue would like to thank the entire Fernie community for their acts of kindness over the last few days. The recent event shows we support each other. City staff appreciates all the support given and thank everyone for their kindness. We offer our sincere condolences to the family for this tragic loss,” the FFR said.

“This community is the best, the people are the best; thank you all,” said City of Fernie Mayor Mary Giuliano.
