Improper ashes disposal causing concerns
The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) has had a few incidents in the past 10 days of people improperly disposing of fireplace/woodstove ashes.
The most recent example was at the Cranbrook Transfer Station where someone walked a cardboard box of warm ashes past the designated ‘Ash Barrel’ and placed it at the back of the waste pile. The box smouldered before catching on fire. (Pictured)
“Thanks to the quick action of staff, the fire was extinguished within the box and did not spread; however, it serves as a good reminder for all: ashes should only be disposed of in the metal cans marked ‘ASHES’ located at all our transfer stations. Never place ashes in the garbage,” the RDEK stated in a Dec. 30 Facebook post.
