Improvements coming to highways near Fort Steele

A $4.5-million contract has been awarded to Okanagan Aggregates Ltd. to resurface portions of Highway 3/93 and 93/95 south of Fort Steele, improving travel for local residents, tourists and commercial drivers, the provincial government announced Feb. 19.

Highway 3/93 is to be resurfaced from Fort Steele Overhead to HaHa Creek Road, a distance of approximately 18 km.

And Highway 93/95 will be resurfaced from Eager Hill Road to Fort Steele Overhead, a distance of 3.6 km.

Work will start this spring, with completion scheduled for the end of September.

“Maintaining our major highways, like 3/93 and 93/95, in good condition requires a strong, long term financial commitment by government. Keeping that commitment has allowed our government to keep our roads safe for us, for commercial traffic and for the many tourists who visit our region,” said Kootenay-East MLA Bill Bennett.

Highways 3, 93 and 95 are important commercial travel routes to the economy of the East Kootenay.

Highways 3/93 and 93/95 provide access for visitors traveling to B.C. from the United States and southern Alberta to the many of the region’s recreational opportunities, including a number of provincial parks.

This project will benefit area residents, tourists and commercial transport vehicles along this corridor with a safer and smoother ride.
