Lake surface zoning to go public in August

A joint District of Invermere and Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK)  initiative to zone the surface of Lake Windermere will be hitting the public open house stage on Wednesday, August 3.

“I’m glad we’re about to start,” said Coun. Spring Hawes during the district’s regular council meeting July 12. “It’s a really big project to take on but it’s really exciting,” she said.

Coun. Bob Campsall said he hopes foreshore issues are considered in the zoning.

“I don’t know how far we can go in terms of the entire surface of the lake but I hope foreshore issues are a part of it,” he said, urging council members and people in the gallery to “go walk along the high water mark” on Taynton Bay to get an idea about what he was talking about.

“Just see how easy it is for you to over some of those tank traps. People are putting up obstructions there, totally not caring about access,” he said.

Mayor Gerry Taft said the lake zoning process, similar to what has already been done by the RDEK on Columbia Lake, may not be able to tackle “some current situations but we have to do our best.”

The culmination of the surface zoning and work being done by the Lake Ambassadors Program “should help,” he added.
