Mayor seeks views on smoking bans in public places
City of Fernie Mayor Mary Giuliano is asking residents to share their views on smoking bans in public outdoor locations.

In an April 30 Facebook query, Giuliano asked, “Several cities in Canada have banned smoking in public places like parks, playgrounds, etc. How do residents of Fernie feel about implementing such a bylaw here? This would protect residents from second-hand smoke and make for cleaner air everywhere.”
The mayor stated she is interested in all views on the subject.
“What do smokers feel about this and do non-smokers care that addictions aren’t that easy to overcome and so this bylaw would cause many to feel rejected as they wouldn’t be welcome at celebrations in parks such as Canada Day? I witnessed many smokers attending over the years; for some, these public celebrations are what they look forward to. I am interested in all opinions and hope that Fernie residents will respond,” Giuliano concluded.
If you have views on this subject, let the mayor know.
