MLA presents highways petition to Legislature

Columbia River-Revelstoke MLA Norm Macdonald presented a petition in the B.C. Legislature today containing nearly 1,000 names of people who are gravely concerned about the lack of maintenance on the highways in the East Kootenay.

The petition was publicized by a group called ‘Taking Back East Kootenay Highways’ which has a Facebook group of almost 1,900 members. The group was formed to show the level of discontent felt by road users and to share specific stories of how the condition of the roads affects the lives of residents.

“I was pleased to present this petition on behalf of the people of the East Kootenay region who are very worried about the state of our highways,” said Macdonald. “I took this opportunity to bring this issue to the attention of the Minister of Transportation Todd Stone.

“One of the biggest issues raised at my office is with the condition of roads and the lack of maintenance to ensure that we can travel safely throughout the area. And I have raised these issues with the Minister and his staff many times. It is clear from this petition that people are fed up. It’s time for the government to take real action to make our highways safe,” Macdonald said.

Kootenay East MLA and Minister of Energy and Mines and Minister for Core Review Bill Bennett stated last winter, following a flare up of public complaints about poorly maintained winter roads, that he would also like to see better maintenance of regional highways.
