Motorcycle rider killed in collision at Fernie

On July 11 at 12:36 p.m., Elk Valley Regional RCMP – along with Fernie Fire Department and BC Ambulance – attended to a collision involving a small SUV and a motorcycle near the Fernie Transfer Station Road turn off along Highway 3 in Fernie.

Initial investigation indicates the SUV, driven by an elderly Fernie male resident, made a turn onto Highway 3 and failed to see the motorcycle, resulting in a serious collision. Both parties were taken to hospital where a short time later, the motorcycle rider died as a result of his injuries.

An RCMP traffic reconstructionist was in the area and attended the scene to investigate. Witnesses remained on scene and were cooperative with the police investigation.

Hwy. 3 remained closed for approximately five hours with a natural detour being used along Dickens Road with support from Ministry of Transportation, Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting and Fernie Fire Department.

There was severe back up in both directions along Highway 3 as the detour was utilized.

The incident was further exasperated by an additional collision involving another motorcycle in the rock cuts near Elko along Hwy. 3, causing additional delays and traffic backups in both directions.

Both locations are now open and traffic is moving back to normal.

Elk Valley Regional RCMP offer their condolences to the family of the deceased motorcycle rider, whose name will not be released at this time as family are still being notified.

Anyone with witness information or dash camera evidence of this fatal collision is asked to contact the Elk Valley Regional RCMP at 250-425-6233. Please refer to file 2025-2185. Our investigation is ongoing.
