According to SD5 Board chair Frank Lento, Bolander has recently returned from the United Arab Emirates. In his four years at the Canadian International School in Abu Dhabi, Bolander served in a variety of positions, including Director of Facilities.

Prior to Abu Dhabi, Bolander taught in Regina, Sask., as a teacher and extra-curricular coach. In 2009 he was a teacher on call for SD5 and coached the senior boys at Mount Baker Secondary School (MBSS).

“Elkford has an international reputation and appeal as a desired work destination. Doug’s recent experience in international education reflects his commitment to working with diverse groups of people and dealing with ever-expanding directives,” says Lento. “These qualities, along with Doug’s exemplary teaching and coaching background make him the ideal choice for Elkford Secondary School.”

Bolander was born in Edmonton, Alberta, but spent half of his childhood and most of his teaching career in Regina. While his background is in history, social studies, psychology and law, Bolander also developed a high performance psychology class and taught in distance education.

Bolander also has an extensive coaching history having coached basketball for community, high school, university and provincial organizations and soccer at various levels.

“I’m excited to be part of the Elkford community, with its natural beauty and growing cultural diversity,” says Bolander. “Teaching provides the opportunity to promote respect for all things and people. In addition to working collaboratively with a great team of students, staff and parents, I look forward to sharing my passion for education and lifelong learning in the implementation and promotion of extracurricular activities.”

Bolander will be joined by wife Brenda. Their two children, Chrystal and Jordan, reside in Calgary. Aside from coaching in his spare time, Bolander enjoys biking, tennis and a skiing.
