An opportunity to give back with Lake Ambassadors

The Lake Windermere Ambassadors, a non-profit society, requires a volunteer with a financial background to act as their treasurer.

This opening on the Board of Directors provides a permanent or part-time resident of the Columbia Valley with a chance to have a measurable impact on the ecological health of Lake Windermere.

The Lake Windermere Ambassadors have a vision of an ecologically healthy Lake Windermere with balanced management approaches that support recreation and traditional uses, high fish and wildlife values, and economic prosperity in the region.

The Lake Windermere Ambassadors direct lake water quality monitoring, restoration projects, lakeshore cleanups, and community education about the ecology of the lake and how to become lake stewards. The Board of the Lake Windermere Ambassadors has been appointed as Lake Management Committee by two local governments, and as such implements the educational and non-regulatory aspects of the Lake Windermere Management Plan.

The Board of Directors is comprised of people representing key community sectors including: business, government, First Nations, recreation, second homeowners, local residents, youth and non-government organizations. The Directors meet face-to-face or by conference call monthly and review and approve activities that implement the Mission and Vision of the organization. The Treasurer reviews the Ambassadors’ accounts and banking on a monthly basis and acts as the liaison between the Society and its bookkeeper.

The Ambassadors have received accolades for their collaborative initiatives and are being used as a model for community-based water stewardship by Living Lakes International, Living Lakes Network Canada, and Friends of Kootenay Lake. They have received recognition as “Freshwater Sustainability Leaders” by the Real Estate Foundation of BC and Polis Project on Ecological Governance, and are well-recognized by water leaders around Canada and internationally.
