Protesting the deer cull in Invermere
About 12 to 15 protesters took to Invermere’s Cenotaph Park today (Saturday, Feb. 18) to protest the District of Invermere’s intended deer cull, which was slated to begin last week.
However, a 14-person group has launched a civil lawsuit against the district, charging stress and health issues stemming from idea of the cull. The district last year received provincial government authority to conduct a 100-deer cull of the urban herds in the town.
The City of Cranbrook conducted a 25-animal cull in the fall of 2011 and the City of Kimberley recently completed a cull of 100 animals.
The court-ordered injunction, as a result of the civil lawsuit before the B.C. Supreme Court, is delaying the cull until at least Feb. 24.
The district’s permit to conduct the cull expires March 15.
