Public safety orgs receive provincial gaming grants

Three Elk Valley-based non-profit organizations dedicated to protecting the public are receiving a combined $176,180 from the province’s Community Gaming Grant program.

Sparwood Search and Rescue Society ($100,000), the Fernie-based Canadian Avalanche Rescue Dog Association $70,000 and Fernie Volunteer Ski Patrol Society ($6,180) are receiving the funds, announced today by Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett.

“The East Kootenay has everything imaginable for anyone who enjoys the great outdoors,” Bennett said. “Fortunately, we also have some of the best search and rescue crews ready to put their lives on the line to save others, and I am proud that our government continues to support their vital work.”

These grants are awarded under the Public Safety category of the Community Gaming Grant program, which allows non-profit organizations to apply for provincial gaming revenues from the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development. Gaming grants are also awarded in the categories of Human and Social Services, Sports and Arts and Culture, Parent Advisory Councils and District Parent Advisory Councils, and Environment.

Every year, the provincial government approves $135 million in gaming grants that benefit more than 5,000 local non-profit organizations that serve communities throughout British Columbia.
