Timber Ridge water billing set to change

At the December 7 board meeting, the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Board of Directors adopted an amendment bylaw that establishes consumption based rates for the Timber Ridge Water System. The new rate structure will take effect January 1, 2013.

Rockyview Wildfire Hazard Development Permit Area

The RDEK is bringing forward some changes to the administration of wildfire hazard development permits in the Cranbrook rural area. Bylaw 2425 proposes some streamlining measures to assist development applicants with designing homes and properties that are resistant to the threat of wildfire. A public hearing on Bylaw 2425 will be held at the RDEK office on December 20 at 4 p.m.

Changes to Town Hall Meeting schedule

Traditionally, the Town Hall Meetings have been held in January and February each year. This year, the Town Hall Meetings will be held in May and June and will incorporate the Volunteer of the Year celebration.

New Truck for Panorama Fire

The Panorama Fire Department will be purchasing a new 4×4 engine apparatus. The truck will come from Hub Fire Engines at a cost of $284,949 plus taxes.

Fireworks planned for Fairmont

The skies will be alight with fireworks over the holiday season. The Special Event Licences have been approved for Fairmont Hot Springs Resort’s Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve fireworks events.

Board meeting dates set

The 2013 RDEK board meeting dates have also been set:

January 4, February 1, March 1, April 5, May 3, June 7, July 5, August 2, September 6, October 4, November 1 and December 6.

Lake Windermere Management Plan Implementation

The board gave first and second reading to bylaws implementing two key recommendations from the Lake Windermere Management Plan. Bylaw 2417 amends the Upper Columbia Valley Zoning Bylaw and proposes six new water zones for the surface of Lake Windermere to control the type, size and location of in-water structures. Bylaw 2418 amends the Lake Windermere Official Community Plan by adding new policies related to lake management, future water zoning applications and a shoreline development permit area. The public hearing for Bylaws 2417 and 2418 will be held on December 27 at 7 p.m. in the Windermere Community Hall.

Discretionary Grants In Aid (DGIA)

Fernie Secondary Senior Boys Volleyball Team will receive $1,250 from the Electoral Area A DGIA account and $1,200 from the Electoral Area B DGIA account to help offset costs associated with their attendance at the BC Boys High School Volleyball Championship in Kelowna.

The Fernie Chamber of Commerce will receive $2,500 from the Electoral Area A DGIA account for the annual Griz Days celebrations and Fernie Youth Soccer will receive $2,500 from the Electoral Area A DGIA account to contribute to the costs of hiring a professional soccer coach for the spring 2013 season.

The Jaffray Fire Department will receive $3,000 from the Electoral Area B DGIA account to purchase ice rescue equipment including a raft, suits and required rope equipment/accessories.

The Cranbrook Skating Club will receive $1000 from the Electoral Area C DGIA account for upgrades to their Club Room at the Memorial Arena.

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #199 will receive $75 from the Electoral Area G DGIA account for the purchase of the Edgewater Remembrance Day Wreath.
