A subject is in custody and a stolen vehicle recovered after an off duty RCMP officer checked an abandon vehicle on Highway 95A near Kimberley on March 19.

The officer had been to an appointment in Kimberley and was on his way back to Cranbrook when he noted a vehicle parked on the side of the highway, near Porteous Road, that wasn’t there earlier. He also saw three subjects walking along the highway not far away.

Upon checking the vehicle he saw that the ignition was damaged, believing it to be stolen and the subjects walking away involved, he went after them and made an arrest. He called for assistance and officers from Cranbrook and Kimberley responded and commenced an investigation. The van had been stolen from Calgary.

One subject is currently in custody and will appear in Cranbrook Provincial Court Wednesday, (March 20) afternoon. He has several outstanding warrants from other provinces.
