Taft questions IH hiring hook

A recent and basic hospital employee job posting for the Invermere District Hospital (IDH) caused a small stir at the Kootenay East Regional Hospital District (KERHD) board of directors’ meeting Feb. 3.

Mayor Gerry Taft

District of Invermere Mayor and KERHD board director Gerry Taft pointed out a recent Interior Health Authority (IH) job posting for a medical radiation technologist for the IDH seemed “strange.”

“What’s strange is the preamble that is trying to attract the candidate to Invermere,” he said, reading the advertisement to fellow directors gathered in the Cranbrook boardroom.

The preamble, which was changed shortly following the meeting, included several sentences about the controversial Jumbo Glacier Resort project, noting what it would be and bring to the area, including a boom in growth to the town closest to the proposed $1 billion ski resort proposal.

“It seems like it was taken straight from the proponent’s website,” Taft said, recommending that he and District of Invermere staff could provide plenty of information on why Invermere “is attractive” to workers, without bringing something that doesn’t yet exist into the picture.

IH’s Acute Area Director Jason Giesbrecht quickly responded, “That’s not what we want there” in IH advertising and promised that he would check with the department involved.

“Great on director Taft for pointing that out,” he said.
