Two arrested for arson from Dec. 22 Fairmont fire

Two Columbia Valley residents have been arrested for arson in connection to the December 22, Columbia Eagle Resort fire in Fairmont Hot Springs.

Columbia Valley RCMP joined the Fairmont Hot Springs Fire Department at the scene after the blaze broke out and because of the nature of the fire, with more than one of the buildings ablaze, they entered into an arson investigation.

Once on scene, officers noted three buildings completely engulfed in flames. Investigation determined that the owners had no insurance and that the buildings had no electrical or water services. Police immediately entered into an arson investigation, reported Cpl. G.D. Simpson of the Columbia Valley RCMP.

“As a result of this very complex investigation, Columbia Valley RCMP was able to identify two suspects. As of January 17, a 20-year-old female from Fairmont Hot Springs and a 25-year-old male from Invermere have been arrested and charges are being forwarded to Crown Counsel for arson,” Simpson stated.

The value of loss as a result of this arson is estimated to be between $1.5 million and $2 million.
