Woman to undertake challenge in memory of brother

This May a Fernie woman intends to undergo a solo challenge in memory of her brother who died last year.

“The challenge is to raise money and awareness for Schizophrenia, which he suffered from and which took his life,” said Lucy Eykamp.

“Since his death I have come to realize how poorly known this illness is – a staggering one per cent of the population gets the illness. But the stigma associated with this illness is so negative within society that there is little public knowledge of this. This negative stigma is not helpful to the people who suffer from the illness – and sadly many people take their lives as a result,” Eykamp said.

To help in raising money and awareness she is planning on running and biking from Brisbane to Tamworth in Australia – a distance of 730-km in nine days (imagine 17 marathons in nine days or the distance from Calgary to Fort McMurray).

“I believe this is a problem that is trans-global,” she said, noting all funds raised will go to both Australian and Canadian charities and research organizations.
