City discharging treated effluent into river

The City of Fernie is currently discharging treated effluent into the Elk River.

The city began advising residents on Feb. 20 that in order to dispose of excessive amounts of water in the sanitary sewer collection system, due to rain and melting conditions, it is necessary to temporarily discharge treated effluent to the Elk River.

The discharge began Feb. 21 and will continue until March 31, in accordance with a B.C. Ministry of Environment operating permit.
