Area F Volunteer of the Year recognized

It was a night of celebration Wednesday night as Kayja Becker was officially recognized as the 2018 Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Electoral Area F Volunteer of the Year at a Town Hall Meeting.

“Kayja has organized and run the children’s section of the Fall Fair for many years and has encouraged the youth in this community to not only have fun, but to come out of their shells while doing it,” said Area F Director Wendy Booth. “From her passion for children, to her passion for animals, Kayja’s giving heart knows no bounds.  This year she took on the position of President of ICAN – an organization dedicated to rescuing and sheltering companion animals. She has put in countless hours planning fundraisers and get togethers to raise awareness.”

In addition, Becker serves as a member of the Columbia Valley Community Foundation Board and can often be found helping with community events including the Sue Wells Art Day and Halloween Haunted House at the Windermere Fire Hall.

Becker was presented with a small gift during the Volunteer of the Year ceremony, which was held in conjunction with the Area F Town Hall Meeting in Windermere.

Following the Volunteer of the Year portion of the evening, Area F Director Booth opened the Town Hall meeting with her Director’s Report. RDEK staff then provided updates on the Windermere Water / East Side Lake Windermere Water Service Project, Five-Year Financial Plan, Solid Waste Management Plan Review and Lake Windermere Official Community Plan.

It was a milestone evening for Booth, as it was her last Town Hall Meeting as Electoral Area F Director prior to the local government elections in October.  She has announced she will not be seeking re-election as an RDEK Director this fall.
