Columbia Valley mountains open Friday

The two biggest ski and snowboard resorts in the Columbia Valley open tomorrow, Friday, Dec. 6.

Panorama Mountain Resort west of Invermere and Golden’s Kicking Horse Mountain Resort open for the season, with Kicking Horse celebrating its 20th season.

Panorama reports 48 centimetres of snow at the summit and 26 cm in the village.

“The blanket of snow at the summit is getting deeper and deeper, while the flakes continue to pile up in the village. We turned on our snow guns on September 28, the earliest we have ever made snow and soon it will be time to dust off those boots, sharpen those planks and get sideways on the slopes. There are already hundreds of ski racers out training on the mountain and we’ll throw open the lifts to the public on December 6,” the resort notes on its website.

Kicking Horse reports new snowfall of 20 cm in the past 24 hours.

Fernie Alpine Resort opened with limited terrain last Friday (Nov. 29).

Fairmont Hot Springs Ski Hill’s opening day is Dec. 20.
