Crash and follow-up could have been tragic: RCMP

At around midnight on November 11 / 12 Columbia Valley RCMP was notified from a citizen in the area of Petro Canada that they had heard what sounded like a vehicle roll over in the Athalmer industrial area of Invermere.

A patrol was conducted and it was quickly evident that just south of the intersection of Panorama Drive and Industrial Road No. 1 a truck had apparently lost control and turned on its side obstructing both lanes of traffic.

There were no occupants in the vehicle. A resident from a couple houses down advised that they had heard the collision and came outside to see what happened. Voices were heard saying that they needed to get away from the vehicle that had crashed, and they had taken off prior to being seen by the resident.

Invermere Fire Rescue attended the scene and secured the vehicle as it had rolled onto the driverā€™s side, was left running, and fuel was steadily leaking out of the fuel tank.

Warbrick Towing attended and removed the vehicle. Records checks on the vehicle provided the registered owner who was cooperative, reported Cpl. Brent Ayers of Columbia Valley RCMP.

The driver was identified and it was ascertained in due course that neither the driver and or any of the three passengers had sustained any major injuries. The driver was levied with the following charges:

– Fail to remain at scene of accident MVA – 68(1)(a);

– Drive without due care MVA – 144(1)(a);

– Operate contrary to class MVA – 24(1).

ā€œFor everyone involved, and this includes first responder and residents, it was fortunate that this had not ended up as a tragedy,ā€ Cpl. Ayers stated.
