Electoral Area F Volunteer of the Year honoured
Cam Gillies has been officially recognized as the 2019 Electoral Area F Volunteer of the Year.
“Cam is a tireless volunteer and a wonderful example of what a difference one person can make,” said Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Electoral Area F Director Susan Clovechok. “One of his nominators summed it up best when they said that Cam exemplifies volunteerism as he puts in over 1000 hours of his time each year to support countless community efforts. What makes his contribution that much more incredible is that he gives so much while operating a small business and raising a young family.”
Some of the activities and initiatives he has been involved in include the Columbia Valley Radon Awareness Program, Nordic Ski Youth Development Program, Lake Windermere Whiteway, Columbia Valley Electric Vehicle Carshare, and the Wild and Scenic Film Fest.
In addition, Gillies is the chair of the Technical Review Committee for the Columbia Valley Local Conservation Fund, the Invermere Branch Director for Wildsight, and volunteer director for the Toby Creek Nordic Ski Club and volunteers his time for the Wings Over the Rockies Bird Festival and Columbia Valley Hut Society.
“Beyond the time Cam gives, many people spoke out the impact of the way he gives,” added Clovechok. “He is known for his kindness, positivity and ability to be focused on creating solutions, all of which help build a sense of community and empower others to get involved.”
Several members of the Nordic Ski Program and other groups he has been involved in filled the room July 2 in Windermere as Gilles was formally recognized at a volunteer celebration in connection with the Area F Town Hall Meeting. Attendees to the Town Hall Meeting heard presentations on the Five-Year Financial Plan, Windermere Water Upgrade Project, Solid Waste Management Plan Review, new Recycle BC Depot and FireSmart.
