Columbia Valley Rural Fire & Rescue Services is warning the public with the sudden degradation of the ice surface and this week’s warm temperatures to please use caution and avoid recreational use of Lake Windermere ice.

“While we are aware of a person breaking through last weekend, and that most Ice shacks are off the lake at this time, our own members were surprised while practicing ice rescues on Lake Windermere last night how quickly the thickness and condition of the ice has deteriorated,” the department noted on social media.

“There are still vehicles on the ice and we strongly recommend that people reconsider these actions.”
