On Monday, May 18, Columbia Valley Search and Rescue (CVSAR) was asked to assist BC Ambulance following a mountain biking incident on the Johnson Trail near Invermere.

An eight-year-old girl fell approximately 150 feet down an embankment along Toby Creek. Seventeen search and rescue volunteers responded to this incident and utilized rope rescue systems to access and evacuate her. She was evaluated by a volunteer SAR doctor and STARS and then transported to a waiting helicopter and flown to Calgary.

We are still navigating a pandemic and while some recreational opportunities are opening back up, CVSAR requests that people continue to make responsible choices to limit the potential exposure to our volunteers and reduce strain on other emergency and medical resources,” stated Steve Talsma, Columbia Valley Search and Rescue Manager and Scott Chaffey, SAR President in a media release.

The rescued girl’s condition in a Calgary hospital is unknown at this time.

CVSAR is a member organization of the BC Search and Rescue Association (BCSARA) made up of highly trained volunteers who provide technical rescue and search responses between Spillimacheen and Canal Flats from the Alberta border to the height of land in the Purcell Mountains to the west.

CVSAR members contribute over 3,000 hours annually to the community.
